이슬람 정권은 1979년에 정권을 잡자마자 공식적으로 이란 여성들에게 히잡을 입을것을 요구하기 시작하였다. 30년 후에도, 이란 경찰은 여전히 사람들의 복장에 대해 강력히 통제하기 위해서 매년 여름마다 히잡 엄중규제를 하고 있다.
